More than 3,000 Maine students have the opportunity to use the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram in the classroom weekly, thanks to discounted and sponsored subscriptions made possible by the Newspapers in Education (NIE) program "Press Herald in the Classroom." From current events classes to complex math courses, newspapers are used by teachers as a supplement to their daily curriculum. The newspaper is the most up-to-date and relevant textbook your child will ever use. And through this literacy program, students in our state can gain the skills necessary to compete in today's society and workplace.
Besides current events, the Press Herald/Telegram helps students learn a variety of subjects, from math to science to geography. And because it's different than a textbook, it makes learning fun.
A suggested donation of 50 cents per vote in the Pet Idol contest will be directed to the Newspapers in Education program and the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland to help support both of these non-profit organizations.
Oh, and in case you didn't know, your donation is tax deductible.
