My busy girl Casco, took an intentional flying leap off of the three stairs near our front door last night and landed with a "YELP!" She walked on three feet for a minute and limped her way through the rest of last night. This morning she's tenderly walking on the offending paw, but has a definite tender spot on the top of her paw, just under the joint. If I stroke it even very gently, she gives me a wrinkled nose ("OUCH!") and then licks me and nudges my hand away with her nose ("Hands off, mom, if you don't mind..."). Last night it looked slightly swollen, but the swelling seems to be gone this morning.

I'm thinking that she sprained it on the throw rug that was folded over and otherwise off-kilter from foot traffic. I gave her some buffered aspirin at bedtime, but I don't want to do that during the day because I don't want her to start charging around because she's feeling better and aggravate the injury. I'll crate her while we are gone today so that she doesn't wrestle with Hagrid and hurt herself any further.

I don't want to take her to the vet prematurely... I know that sometimes, just like us, dogs get a gimpy injury that corrects itself in short order... but I also don't want to wait too long.

Any thoughts or words of wisdom from my doggy people here at Maine Pets?

Gooddogz says,
I never know the best call to make for ouchies like you describe. You "could" call the vet and see if you can get a baseline on what requires being seen and red flags you should look for. Of course they will tell you to come...Sounds like a good day for crate rest, hand walks, and Kongs.

Having just completed 10wks of care on a broken leg (ulna bone) on one of my 3 dogs - if it were me, I'd bring Casco to the vet. Better to know now than to have to rush to the emergence vet later (lots more $$$). But that is just me. Gooddogz advice about calling and getting a baseline is good though, so definitely start there.
