news from the tainted pet food world this morning

This mere blogger doesn't even know where to begin.

The story has crossed big time into main stream media. Reports that hogs were fed feed with tainted melamine that may have trickled into the human food chain is rampant this morning. As many of us have been saying since this story first broke, this is NOT just a pet food story. This story has major and very serious global implications about the safety of the food chain.

*****Researchers have identified 3 other toxins in pet food.
Karen Roebuck'seport in the Pittsburgh Times-Review is well worth reading in it's entirety.

*****The Washington Post has a good summary of current events here.

*****By now you all may have read that the melamine may have been added on purpose to spike the protein level for a higher profit. Sure seems plausible to me. You can read more about that here in the LA Times.

*****Royal Canin has recalled DRY food due to RICE protein concentrate contaminated with melamine. That makes 3 out of five off the companies identified. Stay tuned for the next two. (Natural Balance, Blue Buffalo and Royal Canin)

Can you imagine if the FDA issued a press release that they were investigating 5 brands of baby food that may contain poison and then told us they were still conducting tests and would get back to us in a week or so?
Why is this delay in information ok for pet food?
