Can ultrasonic products quiet barking dogs?

birdhousebark.jpg

I have been remiss in my blogging duties over on Itchmo.com, but I just made up for it with a review of Pet Safes new Ultrasonic Faux Bird House.

In the last few weeks, I have been bombarded with ultrasonic pet solutions for barking dogs both on my welcome home pages and via direct marketing. The makers of these ultrasonic products claim it will solve both my barking dog problems and even stop my neighbor's dogs from barking. By emitting a noise only a dog can hear when they bark, the company claims the dog will find the product so annoying it will quiet them.

Beware direct marketers of the can of worms you may open when you fill my in box with crap.

my concern would be - what effect that can have on a dog's ears - it sounds awful.

There is no substitute for training! E devices are no solution. They can be a management tool if properly used, but they are not something I would choose whether they be a No Bark collar, a hand held device, or this bogus birdhouse.
I have an offender who if left in the dog yard, alerts me when he sees people and/or other dogs. I try to manage him by either calling him in, or going out and distracting him in some fashion before he can get the other 5 going in a barkfest. I have tried more negative approaches ( Mr Squirty the water bottle, yelling etc) and they really don't work. I find distracting the dog into a game or a training routinue the best solution for all concerned. "Hey guys, come get a cookie! Now everybody, group sit!" is extremely effective.
Fortunately, my neighbors like my dogs ( they have a high cuteness factor), and I make a point of not letting them become a nuisance by leaving them out unattended. It is my responsibility as a dog owner to manage my pack effectively.

I've just been to read your opinion at itchmo.com and have left a rather long comment there. So I won't repeat it here except to say that people's rights to peace and quiet should take precedence over a dog's right to bark. I was forced to use an ultrasonic bark stopper to stop the barking of two dogs belonging to my mother's neighbour - my mother is in her 80's and her neighbour just laughed when she said the barking was making her life a misery. The gadget worked, thank God, and I am considering getting one to use in my own garden as I too am surrounded by inconsiderate dog owners who make no effort to control the barking.

Dogs can and should be taught not to bark. This is only basic common sense and good manners and it's easy to do too. I love dogs but hate continuous barking, as indeed does everyone whose life is adversely affected by it. All neighbourhoods can contain old people, sick people, young babies, shift workers - all people for whom the noise of dogs barking can be an annoyance at best and a quality of life-destroyer at worst. Remember this the next time you want to complain about the steps people take to put a stop to the noise - isn't it possible the dog owner is the one who is cruel?
