H.A.R.T. Applauds Governor Baldacci’s Proclamation
Declaring November ‘Adopt a Shelter Pet Month’
Cumberland, Maine, November 2, 2009, The Homeless Animal Rescue Team of Maine (HART), no-kill shelter and adoption center for cats and kittens based in Cumberland, Maine, today responded to the news that Governor Baldacci has agreed to issue a proclamation declaring November ‘Adopt a Shelter Pet Month’ in Maine. The proclamation signing is scheduled to take place in the Governor’s office November 6, 2009. According to Marcia Carr, President of HART, ”The volunteers at HART were thrilled to learn the news! Right now we have approximately 230 cats and kittens that need good homes, so anything we can do to bring the public awareness level up is encouraging.” She continued, “In 2008 the shelter took in 794 surrenders and was able to find homes for 725 cats and kittens. However, 2009 has been a challenging year for companion animals with many surrendered due to the economy.”
HART raises funds from adoption fees, various fund raising activities, as well as from individuals and foundations. Until the cats are adopted, they live freely in various rooms at the shelter where they are able to run, play and bond with one another. Because the cats are not kept in cages, people looking to adopt a cat have an opportunity to know the cat’s true personality.
All cats and kittens are spayed or neutered and brought current on vaccinations. All the cats are tested for feline leukemia (FELV) and Feline Immunodeficiency virus (FIV).
HART is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation licensed by the State of Maine. The Homeless Animal Rescue Team is located at 302 Range Road, in Cumberland, Maine.
