PORTLAND - The Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, MainePets.com and Fox23 today announced plans for a Pet Idol contest to begin March 16. Proceeds will benefit Press Herald in the Classroom, a Newspapers in Education (NIE) program, and the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland. Participants will enter the contest by uploading digital photos of their pet to MainePets.com from March 16 through April 1. The public will be given the opportunity to vote (and be given a suggested donation) beginning April 5 through May 1. One pet will be crowned Pet Idol. Top winners will receive gift certificates from pet stores located in the southern Maine area. Several newspapers use similar “Pet Idol” promotions as a means to raise funds for NIE initiatives. This year, the Portland Press Herald is “thrilled to combine this worthy program with one that will also benefit the largest animal shelter in Maine . This contest was a lot of fun last year, and the MainePets.com Web site will make it easier for people to submit photos,” said Circulation Director Dan Montgomery. “MainePets.com is a new and exciting online community for pet owners throughout the state. The 'Pet Idol' contest is the perfect way to introduce our site to pet lovers, and we're looking forward to sifting through all those great pictures,” said Maine Today Director Dan Dinsmore. As the television station that airs the show “American Idol,” FOX 23 views Pet Idol as an ideal partnership with the Portland Press Herald and Maine Today. “ FOX 23 strives to make a strong local connection with the communities we serve through entertaining programming, fun contests and a variety of public service initiatives. ‘Pet Idol’ fits the bill perfectly, and we’re happy to be involved,” said FOX 23 President and General Manager Tom MacArthur. FOX 23 WPFO hit the Maine airways on April 24, 2003 , to become the first FOX affiliate in the broadcast area since 2001. Its mission is to entertain and inform, thereby enhancing the lives of its viewers and clients. The station seeks to acquire, create and own content that supports this mission.
