this cat is perfect. it was a stray and we took it in. it is loving, healthy and will let you pick it up, kiss it on the nose and will not attack you. But it has its claws and scratches them on all the furniture. My husband hates it and freaks out everytime he does it. But I thought I read some where they need to do it. Is it true and why?

Yes its true they do it because cats like me, love to scratch things. Why you ask? Sometimes they do it because they are leaving there scent items. Try getting a scratching post or pad and some toys that they will play with and ignore the rest of your furniture if the ctas doesnt you just have to disapline it. Make sure you spend at least an hour a day playing with your cat so it will get tired and it will rest. Tell me how things work out.

You can also get double sided tape from pet stores or the vet or on line (from Fosters and Smith cataloge) and put it on the areas that kitty likes to use to sharpen his claws. Kitty won't like it when he put pads on it and it sticks. Doesn't look too nice, but it stops the behavior. I used to put tips (plastic nail shaped "claws") on my cats---but gave up cause they would pull them off. Looked pretty tho.
