akc registering puppy mill dogs

i noticed that a couple of pet stores have gone out of business. I keep hoping that if enuf do, the retail market for puppy mill dogs will disappear and then the breeders. Wrong. I read Nancy's link re akc registering puppy mill dogs. I can be pragmatic about a company losing ground and doing things to increase membership. The logical thing is to look at what is attracting people to other registries and whether or not you want those dog owners in your group. have you lost breeders that you had before, have you asked them why they left? What have you done internally to keep your breeders?
But, if you don't like the answers you are getting, (I don't know if that is true or not) and cannot or will not make changes then you decide to increase your membership. you hide behind the construct that you will be setting up a "policing" of these breeders, pretending to improve the lives of the breeding dogs and the puppies and therefor you are really doing a good thing. So then you can justify violating the stated goals of your organization. Happens in business/government/social services every day.
in addition to the moral and ethical issues I have with these farms/mills---I can't believe that the "gold standard' of dog breed registeries is going to allow breeders who are continuing to breed dogs with genetic defects---that the breed clubs are trying to breed out. (I know that many breeds are bred to genetic defects by so-called "good" breeders). Schipperkes carry epilepsy and have a defect that is similar to Tay Sachs disease in humans--its horrible and the dogs show signs at around 2, and live progressively debilitating lives until they die around 4. the "good" breeders have had their dogs tested, don't mate carrier to carrier--OR don't mate a carrier at all, neutering them. This way they hope to get rid of the disease. i'm sure the Amish puppy farms will test their breeding stock for this disease, as will the mills in Arksansa etc.
its reprehensible on all levels. No AKC sanctioned events for me anymore. I will express my displeasure in a letter to the board of Directors of the AKC. I will urge the various clubs that hold meets etc. to not hold AKC events. Altho they might think it, we are not that stupid. If they have to sleep with the devil to stay in business, is it worth it?

Gooddogz says,
BLEK.Makes me sick. I feel bad for good honest decent breeders, they are the ones who will suffer here. And it will make it even harder for puppy buyers to find a decent hobby breeder once it becomes "cool" to not do the whole dog show thing and support the AKC in any way. Thanks for taking the time to post this blog. Very thought provoking. No easy solutions that I can see.

This is the sad thing about some things the AKC has done on the breeder side. I, myself, have never gone by registries but by referrals. Also, I go by breed clubs in specific. I ask around a whole lot of people who are familiar not only with breed standard, but with working with the Doberman breed. Then I ask a ton of questions to the people that I was referred to.
I think in the end, educating JQP, who is more likely to be duped, is part of the answer. For me, since I like their obedience program as it was (not so much Rally) then I will continue going to those events. I do understand people's displeasure with the AKC and some things they have done.
Ironically, I think it's the public's disinterest with training at all that has brought down the business in the AKC LOL. Perhaps they should just think of downsizing, as many other business organizations have done to deal with the lack of revenue. Certaintly, some restructuring is in order.

babette says,
When i got the skip, i contacted the breed club--and was referred to his breeder. i checked her out and she was a back yard breeder. Her dogs are not going to go out and win best in breed, but she neutered her one genetic carrier, knew one dog in her 30+ years of breeding skips that had epilepsy and never bred that combo again. She bred for temperament and soundness. he was a member of her last litter--they can live to 20 and she was in her 70s then. She was what i think of as a good back yard breeder. maybe the breed clubs can keep these folks going and to heck with the akc.
But i think of all the breeds that have all these health issues, that bad breeding is just going to perpetuate--cavalier king charles spaniels---horrible, horrible health issues for a breed that is smart and sweet and makes a wonderful house pet. GRRRR.
instead of looking at how to make themselves operate more efficiently--which is what other businesses do (and it is a business) they think they just need to generate more fee income.
i hope it bites them in the butt.

I've looked everywhere for the link that Babette refers to...can someone point me to the link that was the reason for this discussion. Seeing as I have 3 AKC registered dogs from a responsible, reputable breeder - one currently being shown, I'm curious. Thx!
