I would ask specific questions about where the money goes to. For instance, our donors are able to sponsor medical treatment for a dog, give a leash and collar to a foster dog, feed a pup for a month, etc -- this gives them the reassurance that their money is going directly to the dogs, not a salary or to something they wouldn't support. Make sure they are a non-profit and that they give you a letter or receipt for your donation.

We normally take physical donations to CVHS or NHSPCA. Food both dry and canned, treats, leashes, toys and cages (we brought all our old rabbitry supplies when I liquidated my rabbitry in 1998). I am often less willing to donate to some of the smaller charities I see, but a quick google search can often turn up any skeletons in their closet. Their official non-profit certificate or what not and a receipt is also a good indication they are above board.

We give to greymuzzle.org ,Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue, and the landofpuregold cancer challenges, and also foster senior goldens once in a while. YGRR is very sterling and sound, but Grey Muzzle is new for us.
